Alabama
From The John Coltrane Collection
Created in 2006
Oil on canvas
27" x 24" (including wood frame)
Alabama was created in remembrance of the 1963 Birmingham church bombing that took the lives of four young girls — Cynthia Wesley, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Addie Mae Collins. Inspired by John Coltrane’s haunting composition of the same name, this piece reflects both grief and reverence.
A single vase stands against a deep, earthen backdrop, holding delicate yellow blooms — quiet symbols of innocence interrupted. A sheet of music rests below, referencing Coltrane’s elegy and the role of art as witness. The composition is restrained, contemplative, and intentional — allowing space for reflection rather than spectacle.
One of the remaining works from the Coltrane Collection begun in 2005, Alabama carries historical weight and spiritual depth. The original oil painting is framed in wood and ready to hang.
